Export quota of 70 per cent. The electrical and electronics industry is the second largest industrial employer in Austria, boasting about 300 industrial companies and around 57,000 employees. The production value of this sector was close to EUR 10.9 billion in 2009. More than two-thirds of the products are exported. The branch is a pioneer in developing flexible working time models.
Many companies, from Alcatel and Hewlett Packard to Siemens and Sony, already take advantage of the numerous competitive advantages offered by Austria as a business location, and have set up their international R&D competence centers as well as production plants to manufacture quality products in Austria.
The Austrian province of Burgenland intends to strongly expand its work in the field of optoelectronics over the next years. Burgenland has already set up its own technology center in Jennersdorf, located in the south of the province. At present, three companies conduct research and work in daylight lighting systems, light emitting diodes (LEDs), and traffic lighting systems. The focus of the investment drive will be the promotion of optoelectronics research and development.

The electrical and electronics industry accounts for 34 percent of all R&D investments carried out by Austrian industry. About 6,500 research and development specialists ensure that companies such as Alcatel or Infineon choose Austria as the strategic hub for their R&D activities.
